Nothing can stop a determined burglar, but usually they are in and out in a short period of time.  If it’s to much work they will leave.  So you want to make  it tougher for a burglar to have access to your home.  Deterrents are what you want.  Alarms are deterrents as are barking dogs, but the dog’s probably with you or at a kennel.

It would be nice if you could press a button and a shield would cover your home, but that’s wishful thinking (maybe in the future).  Alarm systems alert authorities, but there still is a little time before they get to your home, so the burglar, if he knows what he’s doing can be gone with the goods before anyone shows up.  I think alarms are great, if you have neighbors that are alert to have a watchful eye.

So what we want to look at are the points of access to your home.  Front Door(s) ,Back Door(s),Garage Door(s),Windows and Sliding Patio Doors.

Windows of course are vulnerable.  Windows generally have pretty good locks, if they are made in the last 20 years.  Front Doors and Back Doors can use dead bolts which are very effective if installed correctly.  Garage Doors can be secured from the inside with a pin on the track to prevent opening.

Then we have the Patio Door or Sliding Glass Door, depending on which part of the country you are in, but still the same door.  These doors can be easy to break in.

Some, if not properly adjusted can be lifted up off their track and pushed in, easy access. {Note: Here is a link to a Blog that can help with this problem:  http://lockking.org/how-to-raise-your-sliding-glass-door} But mostly it’s the lock or latch this is ineffective.  You can place a stick between the door and the side jamb, and that will work, but it can be a pain to deal with, literally, constantly bending over to remove it, forgetting to put it back, children and pets playing with it, it really isn’t practical, just a band aid.  Lockkings Security Bars can be installed at different heights, but the most common is at handle height.  From across the room you can see if the door is locked or unlocked, this adds to your Peace of Mind.

First of all when you approach your  locked house can you make entry without a key.  If you can , well that’s a good place to start.  A burglar or thief looks for the most opportune way to enter your home.  So if you can get in relatively easy then you can guess what an experienced thief can do.

One common sense Tip that most Law Enforcement Groups suggest is that you don’t keep valuables at home, and if you do hide them well in a floor safe or some other area only privy to you.

Another Tip that is mostly put out by Insurance Companies is taking the time to make a list of all your valuables, photographing them and also marking them.  Then put that information in a safe place, safe deposit box, fireproof safe.

So I compiled some Tips from different sites and from experience to share with you.

First of all lets start with Doors: You have to remember unless your home is isolated the thieves have only a short period of time to do their work.

Entry doors and all exterior doors should be solid wood or metal clad with a hand lock and a deadbolt lock.  Burglars can easily kick in hollow core doors and have there way with your possessions.

Thieves can break through a simple keyed lock by various methods.  A door with a deadbolt poses more of a challenge.   So dead bolts are good for exterior doors, but only if they areinstalled correctly.  The bolt when in the lock position should enter the side jamb a least 1″.  The striker plate, that is the metal plate that the bolt goes through needs to be screwed in with 3″ long screws to prevent easy access by prying.

The common term “bumping:” is a way a theif can open your door with any key just by bumping the key several times.  If you have an old lock you might want to invest in bump proof locks. If your doors are solid or metal and you have bump proof locks you have eliminated a high risk area.

It is always wise to have a Wide Angle Peep Hole installed in the door .  If you have a Mail Slot in your door you might want to rethink your mail delivery, an experienced thief with a small arm or mechanical device could unlock your door.

So if we have Entry Doors under control lets venture one more to the Garage Door(s).  Most Garage Doors use the same basic track.  This track has holes in it so one is able to put a pin or padlock through the track and the door thus securing it.  Just remember that its there before you open your door.

The next type of door is the sliding door.  They come in various sizes and styles.  The most common type of sliding door is a vinyl door.  There are wooden ones, usually higher end, and of course there are still many aluminum doors around.  Most sliders have a interlocking strip between them where they overlap when closed.  This helps with the strength of the door and keeps the weather and prying tools out.  Most vinyl doors have a lock or latch that doesn’t work well, thus putting the stick in the door.  Sliding doors have wheels on the bottom of them and travel on a track.  If the sliding door isn’t adjusted to the right height then they will be  able to be lifted up and out.  A simple adjustment can fix this, click  ’How to Raise a Sliding Glass Door‘.

If you’re anything like me, any changes in routine can be unsettling.  From a change in a doctors appointment, to an unexpected visit from my grandkids… I guess as you get older, your ‘Life Box’ seems to become smaller. It feels  more secure when life goes along at the regular daily pace. Your home is part of your Life Box.  Changes seem larger as we age. Most changes are fine, of course, but their effects are greater than they would have been, say, twenty years ago.

The most noticeable changes are your home, car and family.  Take your car for instance.  You don’t want anyone breaking into it so you are more cautious where you park, locking it faithfully and perhaps setting an alarm.  The same concerns should apply to your home.  Knowing where all the vulnerable places are in your home and safe guarding them in what ever means you can.  You lock your door every time you leave or return.  You check all the doors at night before you go to bed.  You put sticks in the windows to prevent them from being opened from the outside.  This may seem a little paranoid, but it’s basic common sense if you don’t want home intrusion.

You can have an alarm system installed, but you have to remember to turn it on and off and it can be costly.  Signs outside your home indicating that you have an alarm system.  Or, possibly a sign indicating you have an unfriendly dog.  Home security brings peace of mind, particularly in hard economic times.

If you put sticks in your windows,  that works fine, as they are easy to move.  Your doors have their own security with a lock in the handle and a dead bolt lock.  So now you have your window and doors covered, there’s only one thing left. Not all homes have one, but most do – a sliding glass door.  Most sliding glass doors have very inadequate locks.  They can be bumped or “rocked” from the outside and become unlatched.  Of course, high end doors have better locks on them, but there’s always a way to unlatch them.  If you have a sliding glass door you might want to raise the sliding door as high as it will go to take the play or wiggle out of it.  This is done simply by screwing in or out the adjustment screws at the bottom of the door.

After making this adjustment,  you would still want to put in some kind of bar to prevent the door from opening if don’t feel comfortable with the latch.  There are many after-market devices for sliding glass doors from foot levers, to pins, and security bars.  When choosing a security device, remember you want it to be easy to use.  With back problems prohibiting bending up and down, or perhaps opening and closing your doors from a wheel chair, you’ll want to choose something that aids you in the task.  One of the best locks on the market comes from a company in Oregon, JTC Solutions.  Their objective is to provide a security bar that is visible as a deterrent; is easy to install, and, of course, is easy to use.
